Turning Caffeine into a College Fund

Located in Saint John, New Brunswick, College Fund Coffee is a small pop up coffee shop that appears at different markets, mainly, the Queen Square Farmers’ Market. The goal is to help students save for their post-secondary education by simply selling coffee.

It was founded by Max Legere in May 2019 when there was an opportunity to become the weekly coffee vendor at the Queens Square Farmers Market. Since then, College Fund Coffee has appeared every Sunday at Queens Square, rain or shine, to serve up the freshest coffee.

We receive amazing support from our community. In October 2019, we decided we wanted to give back. For our final market of the Queen Square Farmers Market season, we donated all of the profits to the Teen Resource Centre in Uptown Saint John, a charity that supports youth in our community who may be in difficult or vulnerable situations. With help from everyone at the Queens Square Farmers Market, we were able to contribute $500 to the Teen Resource Centre.

June 14th, 2020 was a historic day for Saint John as we observed a socially distant Black Lives Matter Movement. This day happened to coincide with the second market of the 2020 season. In support of this movement, we put out a jar and indicated that all of the money tipped or donated in that jar would be contributed to further the cause, by donating it to P.R.U.D.E Inc. This organization helps to promote race equality among many other things in Saint John, and we were happy to be able to contribute over $200!

In the new COVID-19 era, the Queen Square Farmers’ Market has adapted its layout to allow for social distancing to be practised. Along with this, all vendors including College Fund Coffee wear masks to further reduce the risk posed by the pandemic. You can be assured that even with the new set up, we are still brewing the freshest coffee and providing friendly service to all market-goers!

We are extremely thankful for the amazing opportunities we have received from running this small business and its contribution to our post-secondary education savings!
